FIRST START WITH HYUNDAI R5: NIKOLAY GRYAZIN TAKES PART IN RALLYE HIVERNAL DU DÉVOLUY
The 22-year-old driver from Russia debuted behind the wheel of a Hyundai i20 R5 as he participated in the French Rally Cup event.

Following their successful performance at the Rallye du Var, where Nikolay Gryazin and Yaroslav Fedorov took second place behind the 9-time World champion Sebastien Loeb who was driving a WRC car, the crew decided to extend their season to yet another event. The decision was based on their preparation for the 2020 program, and chances were that it would include the Rallye Monte Carlo. They picked the Rallye National Hivernal de Devoluy as their training event.

"Discussing our program for the next season we realized that the Rallye Monte Carlo would most likely be part of it, and so we decided to start preparing for one of the toughest rounds of the World Championship. Being absolutely unfamiliar with this rally we contacted the French team Sarrazin Motorsport, which had a huge experience of participating in it and as such would be able to advise us on choosing proper setup and tire strategy.

We decided that we should try out their Hyundai i20 R5 at the Rallye National Hivernal de Devoluy. The route of that event partially runs through the past Monte special stages in approximately similar weather conditions, which can be a good practice before the start of the new season. Moreover, thanks to Stephane Sarrazin's team, we'd get a chance to drive yet another type of R5 car in a rally for the first time."

After the two days pre-event test in France Nikolay and Yaroslav made their start. Unfortunately, on the very first special stage the crew slipped from the road into the ditch, and had to retire. As their key mission was to cover the maximum possible distance and to gain driving experience in extreme weather conditions, the crew agreed to the proposal moved forward by the organizers – namely, to drive the rest of the rally as zero car.

This decision enabled our drivers not to waste the first day, but rather drive the long SS4 Col de la Bachassette. On Sunday they drove on the six remaining special stages with confidence, and by doing so they met their goal for this rally, and gained the experience they would find helpful at the Mote Carlo Rally. Moreover this was the first time in their careers that Nikolay and Yaroslav got to participate in a rally as zero car.

"We really liked this rally, and we're happy that we decided to start here. We managed to drive on almost all of the stages, having gained a lot of experience, not only for the driver and co-driver, but also for our gravel crew. It's great that this race was chosen as the pre-event test for the Rallye Monte Carlo. Perhaps we will come back here again in a year.

And we would also like to thank the Sarrazin Motorsport for providing us with their car. We are grateful to Stephane who was constantly helping us with advice, and sharing his experience. Also, this was our first start with a Hyundai i20 R5 in a real competition, and we must say that we really liked this car!"
